It’s often not possible to tell if a person has mental health problems. You may see someone every day who, for example, has bipolar disorder, but it will be kept completely under control because they are taking the relevant medication. Sometimes, mental health problems can be triggered by an event. Bereavement causes people to have feelings of great sadness, which is entirely natural, and this can last for some time until a period of acceptance is reached. If, however, these feelings of deep sadness continue beyond a period considered ‘normal’, then it can become clinical depression. In other words mental health problems can be triggered by a traumatic event. So, although everyone likes to think that they are in control, it’s a fact that one in ten people will be affected at some time or another.
It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but help should always be sought when necessary. After all, if you are physically ill, you take medicine. This is no different.
Always do your research before selecting a therapist. Therapists are often specialists in particular types of problem. Make sure you get the right one for you. Ask plenty of questions before making up your mind.
You may or may not have heard of CAMS (Complementary and Alternative Medicines). These have become more and more popular, and consist of using herbs and natural substances to treat both physical and mental problems. As, however, these have never been proved to be effective, they should be approached with caution. If you want to try these, only do so under the supervision of a health professional. Never self medicate, as you could do more harm than good. Many claims are made for these remedies, so be vary cautious.
We at Therapist Sydney are serving our local community. We always strive to give great service, and will be delighted to help you.
